’24 shows in 1 month at 63′ – Made Kuti celebrates Femi Kuti’s enduring legacy

In a heartfelt tribute that has sparked widespread conversation online, Made Kuti has celebrated his father, Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti, for pulling off a rare and extraordinary feat, completing 24 shows in just one month across Canada and the United States at the age of 63.

Taking to X on Sunday, August 17, 2025, the Grammy-nominated musician praised Femi’s stamina and artistry while calling out the media for failing to highlight the achievement.

“Femi Kuti just finished 24 shows in 1 month on his Canada/US tour at 63 years old as a multi-instrumentalist/composer/singer/songwriter,” Made posted about Femi Kuti, before adding with frustration: “But we won’t hear anything about that anywhere.”

Clarifying his stance in a follow-up, Made Kuti explained that his criticism was not directed at fans, but at entertainment journalists who, he believes, too often overlook monumental achievements while amplifying scandals and negativity. “If something bad/negative happened to him on the tour he wouldn’t need to pay anyone to mention it,” he wrote.

For Made, his father’s recent tour represents more than just music, it’s proof of professional longevity and resilience. “Not many musicians over 60 still touring the world,” he emphasized, describing it as newsworthy inspiration for young artists about what is possible with consistency and discipline.

Femi Kuti’s enduring legacy

The milestone shows Femi Kuti’s unwavering energy and unmatched contribution to African music. Born Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti in London and raised in Lagos, Femi picked up the saxophone at a young age and joined his father Fela Kuti’s Egypt ’80 in 1979 before founding his own band, Positive Force, in 1986. Over the decades, he has carved out a powerful identity, blending Afrobeat’s political roots with fresh, global influences.

Beyond the tour, Femi has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards in the Best World Music Album category for critically acclaimed projects like Fight to Win (2001), Day by Day (2009), Africa for Africa (2011), and No Place for My Dream (2013). His music, steeped in themes of corruption, poverty, and social justice, continues to inspire global audiences and cement his reputation as a fearless voice for change.

Still performing regularly at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, Femi remains an enduring symbol of artistry, activism, and the Afrobeat tradition. His recent North American tour not only affirms his legendary status but also stands as a reminder that true artistry does not fade with age, it grows stronger.
