Cheetahs edged by Black Lion in Bloem thriller

The Cheetahs suffered a one-point defeat to Black Lion in Bloemfontein on Friday night despite scoring two late tries.

Trailing by eight points in the closing minutes, the hosts hit back through replacement hooker Marko Janse van Rensburg from a rolling maul before winger Prince Nkabinde dived over in the corner after a powerful line-out drive.

But winger Cohen Jasper’s touchline conversion went wide, handing the Georgian visitors a 39-38 victory.

The Cheetahs started strongly with tries from centre Marco Janse van Vuren, Jasper and fullback Michael Annies, with Jasper adding the conversions.

Captain Victor Sekekete crossed early in the second half as the lead swung back and forth in an open contest.

But Black Lion were clinical in reply, scoring six tries in total.

Janse van Rensburg’s late try set up a grandstand finish, but Jasper’s missed conversion ultimately proved the difference.

The teams meet again next in Bloemfontein next Sunday.

CHEETAHS – Tries: Marco Janse van Vuren, Cohen Jasper, Michael Annies, Victor Sekekete, Marko Janse van Rensburg, Prince Nkabinde. Conversions: Jasper (4).
