“My opinion: A-Reece. Yinja lentwana! Ngu woof-woof. Inja yamathambo! Yesis?!!” he opens, before setting expectations for the project. “Business As Usual EP: not for amateurs, not for the masses. It took me a couple of weeks to understand this project. Coz I was looking for hits, I was looking for lento ifunwa ngumntu wonke. BUT this is not for umntu wonke.”

To explain the appeal, Ifani leans into a coffee metaphor. “It’s like coffee. Ricoffy sells more eMzantsi than Espresso. But those who understand coffee know that there’s a craft to espresso. Le laytie is a craftsman. A smooth, calculated and complex craftsman. This has to be the BEST ‘coffee’ I’ve ever had eMzantsi.”

The veteran rapper said that the EP has become his go-to mood setter. “I play it on repeat and create a mood, then zone out kwizinto zam.” His favourite cut is “Scented Candles,” although he insists the sequence works as a whole, singling out the melodic intro into “So Much” featuring Kwazi and the “Solo Interlude.” “Damn uyacula lo Kwazi!! Ingath uphuma eStates,” he added, praising the guest’s vocals.

What grabbed him most was the architecture of the tracklist and the way silence is used as a device. “What ‘The Boy’ did there can only be understood by connoisseurs. A song sandwiched in two melodic joints. Coz SILENCE is as powerful as Long Verses: only a few get this. The Boy delivered silence in music form! That is genius kum. Three songs play and you only hear ONE verse.”

In addition, Ifani resists comparisons between A-Reece and Nasty C by likening them to different top-shelf flavours. “I can’t compare A-Reece to Nasty C coz it’s NOT the same product. Nasty is like the best Hennessy, he’s X.O. Reece is a Macallan 81 year old. Only a few know about it. And those who know, know the price.”

He calls the nine-track set a classic from start to finish and pairs it with Clipse as his other standout of the year. He also points listeners to two emotional touchstones: “PS: listen to Track 5: Losses and you’ll know how I feel as a person. PS2: listen to Track 8: Sweatshop freestyle!!!! Undixelele ba ayonjaaaaaa na le??”

“I bow to The Boy ngoku ndiyiDyan,” he concludes, tipping his hat to a project he believes was built for the VIP palate.
