Into that fire stepped Lolli Native, who offered a blunt diagnosis of why cyphers and off-the-top moments keep missing the mark for the new generation.

Asked why many up-and-coming rappers struggle to freestyle, especially over older beats, Lolli Native pointed to a culture clash and poor gatekeeping. “My take is get it how you live, we’re from different eras of hip hop,” he said, before turning the lens on the industry itself.

“Sometimes I blame platforms. Because, as people host, you know the people you are hosting. And you purposefully went and got someone you know can’t freestyle, and then you complain when they pull up and they can’t freestyle. There are people out there who really want to rap, but you’re calling those who don’t wanna rap, so what are you saying?”

His critique lands on a sore spot. The refusal to freestyle sparked a wave of commentary about what counts as a “real” freestyle, who should be expected to do it live, and whether classic radio formats are in step with how artists create today. Lolli Native is adamant that the talent pool is not dry, just overlooked.

“Back to the City right now there’s over thousand rappers, I’m not talking hip hop heads, I’m talking rappers. It’s probably over 10 000 even and they want to rap, but media keeps calling the guys that are saying I don’t wanna rap nomore. So who’s wrong? (the media)”

The message is clear. If platforms want raw, unrehearsed energy, they must curate with intention, pair the right artists with the right spaces, and stop treating freestyle segments as traps. It also challenges artists to know the rooms they enter, prepare for any beat that might pop up, and honour the craft if they take the seat.
