Nigerian Afro-pop singer Yemi Alade has shared a deeply personal story about a period of emotional turmoil that left her battling depression for years.
In a candid interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the Johnny hitmaker revealed that she once struggled to come to terms with her real age, a discovery that unexpectedly threw her into a state of confusion and sadness.
According to the award-winning artist, she spent three years believing she was younger than she actually was. “There was a time someone asked me my age, and for three years I kept saying I was 22,” she recounted. “Then I realised I was actually 25. I took out my phone, did the maths, and when I found out the truth, I was depressed for a few days. My mind couldn’t take the reality. It was mental. For three years, I didn’t know my real age.”
Yemi Alade described the experience as both shocking and mentally exhausting, admitting that the revelation deeply affected her sense of identity and through her into depression. “It was mental,” she said. “I didn’t even know who I was at that time.”
The singer explained that, despite maintaining a cheerful image in public, she was privately grappling with self-doubt and confusion. Her revelation sheds light on the often-hidden emotional struggles that accompany fame and personal discovery, reminding fans that even the most confident stars face moments of vulnerability.
“I kept saying I was 22 for three years, and when I realized I was 25, I was depressed for a few days,” Yemi Alade shares with me on what it felt like to suddenly realize how much time had passed.
