Emtee Spearheads A Union To Defend Creatives Against Exploitation. South African rap star Emtee is positioning himself as both artist and advocate, signalling plans to launch “Hustle University,” a union for musicians and entertainers.

The vision speaks to long-running concerns about exploitation, opaque deals, and the absence of collective leverage for artists who often negotiate alone against well-resourced counterparts.
“Hustle university loading. The first ever union fighting for the rights of creatives, our idols, musicians and entertainers cos nobody respects our line of work. Let an artist be who they wanna be. Not how wish they could be. The union is aimed at exposing so called “managers”.”
The message lands like a rallying call. If the initiative becomes a formal body, it could reshape how creatives in South Africa protect their income, their likeness, and their autonomy. A union can set baselines that individual artists struggle to secure on their own. Rate cards for performances and appearances.
A standard set of clauses that must appear in management and label contracts. Templates that define fair splits for collaborators. A confidential helpline where members can flag unpaid fees, vanity agreements, or conflicts of interest. Even a small step toward collective bargaining can rebalance conversations that usually favour the party holding the purse strings.
Emtee’s reference to “so-called managers” touches a nerve. The manager title is unregulated, which allows bad actors to present themselves as gatekeepers while offering little value and assuming excessive control. A union cannot and should not witch hunt. It can, however, introduce a voluntary code of conduct and a transparent complaints process.
