The Friends of Amstel experience unfolded in Soweto on Saturday, bringing high production values, food and brand activations, and a lineup designed to showcase the breadth of South African music. Asked by Yanos Lyrics right after he left the stage how the performance went, Cassper did not sugarcoat the opening moments.

“The performance started shaky (mic was off). I had to put my big brother boots on and get it together. The crowd was amazing. It’s always dope to perform at Friends Of Amstel. It’s one of the dopest shows, the crowd is always amazing, and the sound is always dope. So yeah, things happened, but the show ended up being dope,” Cassper said.

Those opening seconds, when a microphone cut out, forced a quick recalibration. Cassper’s response was theatrical and practical at once. He checked sound, rallied his band and hyped the audience with call and response moments that turned impatience into goodwill. By the time he reached his signature anthems, the crowd had fully warmed up.

Fans sang back every hook, phones flashed, and sections of the audience surged forward as if to complete the performance themselves. Short glitches gave way to sing-along payoffs, and the set closed to sustained applause and chants for more.

Friends of Amstel’s Soweto edition leaned into that communal energy from the start. The event ran from midday into the night and was positioned as a premium lifestyle and music experience with activation zones, food courts and bar areas. Organisers emphasised a no-nonsense entry policy, including park and ride logistics and a strict doors-open window to manage the flow of festivalgoers. The Howler ticket listing and Amstel event pages list the event as an all-day experience produced with a clear focus on safety, production quality and a curated guest experience.

Lineups like this one aim to create moments of cross-genre discovery, and Friends of Amstel delivered just that. The roster pulled artists from amapiano, hip hop and contemporary R&B into the same space. On the bill were Kabza De Small, Oscar Mbo, Sjava, Nasty C, K.O, Zee Nxumalo, Focalistic, Bucie and others, creating a day where dancefloor-ready sets and lyrical performers traded the spotlight. That variety kept the site moving; from daytime lounge vibes to night-time festival intensity, attendees reported that the sound and transitions were handled tightly by the stage crew.
