November is National Diabetes Month, which means in the days leading up to World Diabetes Day on the 14th November, South Africa will be abuzz with diabetes awareness. This year, it’s being taken up a notch. Sweet Life CEO and co-founder Bridget McNulty explains.
#WearBlueforDiabetes & Change a Life
“It’s time for South Africa’s biggest diabetes awareness campaign: #WearBlueforDiabetes. We want the whole of South Africa to wear blue on World Diabetes Day, Friday 14th November 2025.
If there’s one thing our annual #WearBlueforDiabetes campaigns have taught us, it’s that change starts from the bottom up. Empowered individuals empower communities. This World Diabetes Day, let’s equip individuals, schools and companies with the tools they need to run their own diabetes awareness events. Why? Because changing a life starts with one empowered individual.
101 Diabetes DIY Event Boxes sent across South Africa
That’s why we encouraged the Sweet Life Diabetes Community to apply for a Diabetes DIY Event Box this year: a box filled with all the resources you need to hold an informed, enjoyable, diabetes-awareness-raising event, no matter where you are in the country.

“The response was amazing!” explains Bridget McNulty. “We had 148 applications from every province in the country, and it was a real challenge deciding who the 100 boxes went to.” The winning 100 events include all different age groups and backgrounds, free screenings at clinics, community awareness events at staff wellness days and churches, educational talks at schools and community halls, fun runs and walks, and more. Groups from schools and workplaces from various industries like the police force, corporate companies, clinics and hospitals are all joining in to host their own diabetes events.
Virtual Diabetes DIY Event Box
All those who applied received the Virtual Diabetes DIY Event box, which is open to anyone who would like to share the resources available. Part of the event box is an invitation to share pics or video on social media, using #WearBlueforDiabetes. The event that makes the most effort wins a R2,000 PnP voucher, with 3 special mentions each winning R500 vouchers.
You can also become a #WearBlueforDiabetes champion, and be sent a challenge a week in the days leading up to World Diabetes Day. Find out all about it on
What about the 101st event?
That one is being held in Cape Town by Sweet Life, and you’re invited! Come to a picnic with Sweet Life, and celebrate your diabetes champions on Saturday 15th November from 10am to 11.30am (ish!) We’ll do the #BlueBalloonChallenge, share some delicious snacks, and connect with other Capetonians with diabetes. Don’t forget to wear blue, and bring a caregiver, family member or friend, and snacks to share.
