Blaklez Slams Fellow Stars For “talking down” South African Hip Hop. Pretoria-based rapper Blaklez has sparked a fresh debate in Mzansi’s hip hop circles after publicly calling out what he describes as a worrying trend among some of the country’s biggest rap names.

The veteran lyricist said he cannot understand why established artists would criticise the craft itself instead of defending and uplifting it. “Mzansi’s top rap artists talking down on the artform is something I’ll never understand,” Blaklez wrote.

His comments prompted some fans to say he was likely fired up by recent remarks from Cassper Nyovest in which the Tito Mboweni hitmaker said during an interview on 5FM that he makes music for listeners, not for other rappers, adding that he does not care what other rappers think about him. “I make music for people, I dont make music for rappers. I dont care what rappers think about me,” Cassper said.
Blaklez’s post landed amid a wider conversation about authenticity, commercial success and generational divides in South African hip hop. Cassper has also recently been enjoying the success of his feature on lordkez’s “Aweh,” with the remix and its music video becoming a nationwide hit and racking up millions of views and strong chart traction across South Africa.
Aweh” helped explain Cassper’s argument that he makes music “for people.” Lordkez’s original is an R&B-led, melodic track rooted in feeling and relatability; Cassper’s verse and presence on the remix helped bridge the song to hip-hop audiences while preserving its broad, listener-friendly appeal. In doing so, the collaboration demonstrates how artists can prioritise reach and emotional connection with everyday listeners, rather than aiming solely for approval from peers inside the rap community.
