Da LES Opens Up About What Caused His Stroke. South African rapper Da LES has opened up about the causes of the ischemic stroke he suffered in July 2024.
Speaking on the L-Tido Podcast, the North god said that prolonged stress and a party lifestyle played a central role in the health crisis. The stroke affected the left side of his body and forced him into a period of recovery that he says changed his outlook.
“It was definitely stress. I was hiding a lot of stress from everybody. I had a lot of pressure. But just to be real, it was a lot of partying. All I could ever do since I got into the industry was making music and partying because my character it goes with partying,” Da LES said.
“Let me say this, it wasn’t the drugs. It was the stress. Look at Lira, see what she’s going through. It just happens to one of us. But the drugs were just a catalyst. I apologised to everybody, and I’m back, and I want to go out to high schools and have a word with them. Maybe just tell the kids, some motivation.”
The rapper described how a string of bereavements and mounting professional pressure compounded over time and helped push him into a pattern of self-medication and heavy partying that he now acknowledges masked deeper pain.
When asked what specifically caused the stress, Da Les pointed to personal losses. “My pops passed away, AKA passed away, Ricky Riky passed away, Nathan passed away, and these were very close people, and they passed away in a year’s span. And for me, I was just like, I need to get off it and let me just make my music and go about my business with all the craziness (taking drugs) to numb the pain away. But I feel bad in a way. I feel bad for my mom. But now I’m back.” He said.
