Big Zulu Launches Bergville Soccer Tournament To Tackle Alcohol And Drug Abuse. Big Zulu has organised a community soccer tournament in Bergville after witnessing children in the area playing football while others drank alcohol and used drugs. The tournament aims to give young people a safe, structured space for sport and play, and to steer them away from destructive behaviours.
Big Zulu captured his concern and motivation in a social media post, saying, in part, “Yaz bengisekhaya Bergville last week ngabona intwana zidlala ibhola ezinye zibhemela ziphuzela utshwala intwana encane … kwangiphatha kabi ukuth nase makhaya idakamizwa ziyanda … so I decided ukubenzela Big Zulu Soccer tournament.” He added his thanks to local leaders and sponsors, writing, “Ngibe sengiya kumakhosi @kcfcofficial … siyabonga kakhulu amabhola ama bibs nokunye okuningi. Siyabonga kakhulu Makhosi.”
The tournament was born out of frustration with what Big Zulu described as a decline in child participation in organised sport and a worrying increase in substance abuse at home and on the streets. In his post, he contrasted the current situation with memories of his own youth, when children had less idle time and spent afternoons playing football and tending cattle on the hills. Those experiences informed his decision to create a programme that returns sport to the centre of community life.
Big Zulu approached traditional leaders and the organisation tagged in his post, @kcfcofficial, seeking practical support. According to his message, the response included donations of footballs, bibs and other equipment to help set up matches and training sessions. Organisers say these basic items are critical for running regular games and for encouraging more children to join.
