With Christmas, the season of giving, just around the corner, Remitly surveyed over 4,500 people from around the world using the Interpersonal Generosity Scale, a psychological study that captures generosity as a broader behaviour encompassing empathy, emotional support, patience, kindness and a willingness to put others’ needs first.
South Africa’s average generosity score of 51.57 makes it the world’s most generous nation, followed by those in the Philippines and people in the USA.
The Top 25 Most Generous Nations (according to the Interpersonal Generosity Scale)

Rather than focus on how generous people are with their money or material goods, the research focused on capturing generosity as a broader behaviour, encompassing empathy, emotional support, patience, kindness and a willingness to put others’ needs first.
Claiming the top spot, scoring 51.57 out of a possible 60, is South Africa. South Africans agreed the most with statements focused on the importance of others being happy and not solely focusing on themselves, showing high levels of empathy.
Ryan Riley, VP of Marketing for EMEA and APAC at Remitly, commented:
“Generosity is often seen purely through a financial lens, but our study shows it’s much more than that. The countries that rank highest aren’t just those who give the most money, but those where people consistently show up for others with kindness, empathy and everyday acts of support.”
