BirdLife Plettenberg Bay: Penguin release Lookout Beach – 7 Dec 2025

PLETTENBERG BAY HERO’s

(If you find a penguin on the shore it is either wounded or sick)

Having recently moved to Plettenberg Bay and joined the Bird Club, I received a somewhat innocent message in my inbox.

“Come feel the joy as rescued penguins waddle their way back to the ocean! Join us at Lookout Beach on Sunday 7th December for a heartwarming penguin release. It is an unforgettable chance to witness these incredible seabirds return to their wild home.”

So, with family in tow, we did just that, with about 1000 others! It’s an incredible story, wounded or sick penguins discovered on the coast from Stillbaai to Plett are brought in for rehabilitation at the Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre near the Craggs in Plett. With support from Birdlife Plettenberg Bay they are lovingly cared for until they are strong enough to return to the ocean.

We saw 11 penguins do just that as their ‘hero’ carers gently shepherded them back home.
