Stormers to extend Lions’ Cape Town losing run?

The Stormers are targeting a fourth straight Vodacom URC win against the Lions in the Mother City.

The Lions beat the Stormers at Cape Town Stadium in the inaugural 2021-22 tournament, but since then John Dobson’s side has won three in a row on home turf.

Despite racing to a 15-0 lead and seeing Lions lock Ruben Schoeman sent off for a dangerous cleanout on Manie Libbok, the Stormers were made to work hard for victory.

Unconverted tries from Joseph Dweba (two) and Suleiman Hartzenberg gave the hosts a 15-0 half-time advantage, with strong winds contributing to Libbok missing all three kicks.

The Lions struck back through a fine solo effort from Edwill van der Merwe, but their task became tougher when Manie Rass was yellow-carded for a deliberate knockdown. The Stormers capitalised as Leolin Zas scored, with Libbok’s conversion extending the lead to 22-5.

The visitors refused to fade, however, and an unconverted try by Franco Marais set up a tense final quarter as the Lions pressed deep in Stormers territory. It took a late try from Neethling Fouche, converted by Libbok, to finally seal the result and end the Lions’ resistance.

A late try by Adre Smith clinched a dramatic 29-24 URC win for a 14-man Stormers side.

The hosts were staring down defeat when Jordan Hendrikse’s fourth penalty put the Lions 24-22 ahead with only minutes remaining.

The Stormers had played with a man less for the last half an hour after winger Angelo Davids had been red-carded for a dangerous high tackle – an incident that sparked a mass brawl. Marius Louw was carded for his role in the fracas but was able to return to action after serving time in the bin.

In a wildly fluctuating match, Andre-Hugo Venter and Davids had crossed for the Stormers, while Francke Horn and SJ Pretorius scored for the visitors. The Lions led 21-15 early in the second half before Evan Roos scored a brilliant solo try which Manie Libbok converted to edge the home side in front.

Lions supporters thought Hendrikse had won it with his penalty, only for the home side to come up trumps with a late show as Smith finished off a powerful driving maul.
