Zulu Mecca Responds To Dlala Thukzin’s Hit-Making Advice To SA Hip Hop. South African rapper and actress Zulu Mecca has added her voice to the ongoing conversation about the direction of local hip hop, responding directly to recent remarks by Dlala Thukzin on what rappers should do to make hit songs.

Rather than prescribing a formula, Mecca is urging the culture to embrace diversity, nuance, and creative freedom within the genre.

In her first post, Mecca challenged the habit of boxing artists into one standard of success, stating: “Let artists do what they want. There’s sub genres in HipHop and talented artists in each of them. Constantly comparing one to the other is stunting the growth of HipHop.” Her remarks position hip hop not as a one-size-fits-all movement, but as a layered ecosystem where different sounds, audiences, and artistic intentions can coexist without being measured against a single yardstick.

She didn’t stop there. In a follow-up post, Zulu Mecca questioned the very definition of a “hit,” opening up a broader discussion about how success is determined in South African hip hop. “Okay okay okay let’s start from the beginning, WHAT IS A HIT?” she asked, before listing the many factors often cited in these debates, including DJs, clubs, cult followings, charts, and even rap beefs. Using a pointed example, she added: “Also, if ‘four horsemen’ is not a hit, what is it? Please school me.”

Expanding the conversation further, Mecca compared the local scene to the United States, where she believes the vastness of the market allows artists of different styles to thrive without needing universal approval. “In my opinion, the HipHop scene in the US is so vast coz it gives artists of any style the potential to be great,” she wrote. Pointing to streaming numbers, she noted that while she may not personally know a Dax song, his three million monthly Spotify listeners signal undeniable success. That comparison led her to a pressing question for the local industry: “What is success here in SA?”

Zulu Mecca’s comments arrive at a time when SA hip hop is once again interrogating its identity, impact, and future. While some argue for hit-driven strategies to revive mainstream dominance, her perspective highlights a different concern, that an obsession with comparisons and charts may be limiting the genre’s growth rather than advancing it. In doing so, she reframes the debate from chasing hits to redefining success on broader, more inclusive terms.
