Springbok attack coach Tony Brown says he has “massive insights into how the All Blacks operate” as the world champions prepare for next Saturday’s Rugby Championship blockbuster at Eden Park.
The Boks face their fiercest rivals at the Auckland fortress where New Zealand are unbeaten in 50 Tests dating back to 1994. South Africa’s last win at the venue came in 1937.
Brown, the former All Blacks playmaker and Highlanders mentor, admitted it felt special to return home.
“Being a Kiwi in the Springbok environment … asking me questions around the haka, about the All Blacks, about rugby in New Zealand. I’ve got some massive insights into how the All Blacks operate,” he said.
The 50-year-old has both played with and coached alongside members of Scott Robertson’s staff, and believes that inside knowledge can help Rassie Erasmus’ meticulous planning.
“For me, being part of the Springboks is a massive honour. Coaching against my home country is super exciting. I want to be part of the biggest games on the biggest stages.”

Brown also explained his approach to guiding South Africa’s flyhalves – Handré Pollard, Manie Libbok and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu – insisting the role is about control and decision-making rather than individual flair.
“They might have small differences, but I don’t coach them any differently. Ultimately, they need to control the game, manage field position and take space when it’s on.”
JAKE: All Blacks aura has disappeared
He emphasised that Bok attack will continue to rely on a blend of forwards and backs.
“You can’t attack with backs alone. Backs need the forwards to create momentum and get over the gain line … the better we attack together, the better the opportunities we create.”
