The 31st Annual South African Music Awards (SAMA31) nominations are officially out, and one of the most exciting categories for fans of rap and lyricism is Best Hip Hop Album. This year’s shortlist showcases the diversity, grit, and storytelling power that continues to make South African hip hop a defining voice in the country’s music culture.

Each project represents a unique perspective in hip hop’s ever-expanding landscape.

Blxckie’s See U Soon Delux cements his role as one of the most versatile voices of the new generation, blending melodic rap with sharp lyricism. His nomination continues a remarkable run, proving his staying power in a fast-moving industry.

Tony Dayimane’s Red October: Induction highlights his raw, uncompromising approach, giving fans a deeply personal and hard-hitting project that reflects his rise in the scene.

Loatinover Pounds brings Pretoria’s energy to the national stage with Pray 4 Pitori, a project that has resonated with street culture and elevated his profile as one of the most authentic new voices in the game.

Sizwe Alakine, formerly known as Reason, steps into bold new territory with Audio 2D; Dear Darkie, blending his lyrical depth with sonic experimentation that pushes the boundaries of traditional hip hop.

Finally, 25K, also known as Don Kilograms, returns with Loyal To The Plug: The Life & Times of Don Kilograms. As one of Pretoria’s finest, 25K has built a reputation for storytelling rooted in lived experiences, and this project reflects his journey, struggles, and hustle with raw authenticity.

For many years, this category has almost always featured the likes of AKA, KO, Kwesta, Cassper Nyovest, and Nasty C — household names who have shaped and defined South African hip hop. The absence of these giants in this year’s nominations marks a complete generational shift, signalling the rise of new voices who are carrying the torch forward. This transition highlights the genre’s evolution from legacy dominance to fresh, diverse sounds that reflect the current pulse of the streets.

The SAMA spokesperson, Unati Gwija, has described this year’s awards as “the wisdom of age meeting the exuberance of youth.” The hip hop category embodies that perfectly — a mix of seasoned talent and hungry new names, all pushing the culture forward in different ways.

Set to take place in November 2025, SAMA31 will roll out in a hybrid format, merging the spectacle of a live ceremony with the accessibility of a digital broadcast. This innovation ensures fans across South Africa — and beyond — can experience the thrill of the awards in real time.

With such a strong lineup, the Best Hip Hop Album category is wide open. Will Blxckie’s consistency give him the edge? Can 25K secure his crown as Pretoria’s storyteller-in-chief? Or will the new wave — from Tony Dayimane to Loatinover Pounds — surprise the industry with a breakthrough win?

What’s clear is that South African hip hop is alive, evolving, and boldly entering a new era. Come November, the stage is set for another historic moment in the genre’s journey.
