Released in 2024, Audio 2D: Dear Darkie is a full-length project that sees Reason blending introspective storytelling with socio-political themes. The album has been described in previous interviews as a personal letter to Black identity and experience, featuring collaborations with various artists and producers. The title itself hints at a layered narrative, exploring dualities in audio and identity.

Over the years, Reason has been recognised for his lyrical depth and consistency in the South African hip hop industry. However, this particular acknowledgment appears to hold special significance for the rapper, given the long journey he referenced in his celebratory post.

The SAMAs, hosted annually by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA), are among the country’s most prestigious music awards, aiming to honour musical excellence across various genres. The 31st edition includes a competitive lineup in the hip hop category, reflecting the genre’s continued growth and evolution within the South African music landscape.

In interviews promoting the album, Reason had previously spoken about his intention to create music that not only entertains but also reflects the lived experiences of Black South Africans. He emphasized the importance of honesty and vulnerability in his lyrics, elements that are evident throughout Audio 2D: Dear Darkie. The project also features contributions from producers and vocalists who helped shape its distinctive sound.

The 31st SAMAs ceremony is expected to take place later this year, with final dates and venues to be announced by RiSA. Nominees across all categories will be in attendance, with performances and special segments planned to honour the year’s musical achievements. For Reason, the nomination adds to an already impactful year and may signal further accolades to come.

As the countdown to the awards ceremony continues, Reason’s acknowledgment in the Best Hip Hop Album category cements his presence in the upper ranks of South African hip hop and marks another chapter in his enduring music career.
