Griquas top Currie Cup after Boland slip

Griquas were the big winners in round six of the Currie Cup Premier Division, while the Lions, Sharks and Pumas also secured crucial victories.

The Kimberley-based side stunned the Cheetahs 40-10 in Bloemfontein on Friday night, toppling the former log leaders with a dominant performance that propelled them to first place.

On Saturday, the Lions crushed an injury-hit Vodacom Bulls team 44-5 in Johannesburg, ending the latter’s playoff hopes.

That was followed by a thriller in Pietermaritzburg, where the Sharks edged Boland 33-31 thanks to a last-gasp penalty.

The round ended in Nelspruit, where the Pumas produced a clinical 39-13 bonus-point win against Western Province to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Griquas now sit top of the table with 25 points from five wins in six matches. Boland, who picked up two bonus points despite their narrow loss, are second with 23.

Just behind them are the Lions and Cheetahs on 21 points each, while the Pumas are within striking distance on 20.

The Bulls and Sharks trail on 10 points, with WP anchored at the bottom on one.
