Man City’s rough start to their 2025/2026 season campaign has been further dampened by a major injury concern.
Following a poor start to the 2025/2026 season in the Premier League, Man City’s struggles have continued as Pep Guardiola now has an injury concern with one of his new key player signings in Rayan Cherki.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed that French midfielder Rayan Cherki will be sidelined for around two months due to injury.
The 22-year-old, who arrived from Lyon in June for an initial £30.45m, made an immediate impact by scoring on his Premier League debut in a 4-0 victory over Wolves. He then featured in the defeat to Tottenham the following weekend but was missing from the squad as City suffered a second straight league loss, going down 2-1 to Brighton.
France’s national team announced that Cherki has sustained a quadriceps tear, ruling him out of Didier Deschamps’ squad for September’s World Cup qualifiers. Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike has been drafted in as his replacement.
The setback also means Cherki will not be available for the first Manchester derby of the season, scheduled for Sunday, 14 September 2025.
Cherki, who previously played in Lyon’s dramatic 5-4 Europa League loss to Manchester United, has been vocal about his motivation to face City’s rivals. Upon signing for the Premier League champions, he admitted he was eager for revenge.
