“Hip Hop has explicit lyrics”: DJ Zan-D Slams Moral Policing Of Artists Amid Leehleza Lyrics Criticism. The amapiano scene is once again at the centre of a heated cultural conversation, not because of a new release, but due to a growing debate around lyrics, influence, and artistic freedom.

During the heated segment on Piano Pulse Podcast, Nota specifically targeted the viral hook from Leehleza’s 2025 track Nika Labafana Ikhekhe Labo (produced by Myztro, Shaunmusiq & Ftears), urging the artist to stop lines like “Nika labafana ikhekhe labo, balambile” – which roughly translates to “Give the boys their cake, they’re hungry.” He argued that such lyrics promote promiscuity and moral decay amongst the youth in South Africa.

Veteran DJ and outspoken media personality DJ Zan-D has stepped into the fray with a fiery response to this criticism aimed at popular hype man and vocalist Leehleza. In a strongly worded statement that has since circulated widely online, Zan-D dismissed the calls for restraint with characteristic bluntness.

“F?ck that bullshit. People make movies about killing people, sex and even rape, does that mean they must also stop? Hip Hop has always had explicit lyrics, and we consumed it, but I’m not a thug or a killer today. Come on, man. Just raise your kids right and let the creators create. It’s nothing new. Even Kwaito did it,” he said.

The exchange taps into a familiar tension within South African music culture. Artists continue to walk a fine line between raw, street-rooted expression and growing public scrutiny in an era where songs can go viral among all age groups overnight. Amapiano, which rose from township dance floors to global stages, has always thrived on party energy, coded language, and playful provocation, echoing the spirit of the Kwaito era before it.
