Nasty C Reveals Why He Stopped Going To Church: “I end up feeling like the devil.” South African hip hop star Nasty C has shared a deeply personal reflection on faith, fame, and discomfort in sacred spaces, revealing why he has stopped attending church despite valuing the spiritual experience it once gave him.
Speaking candidly during an interview with Nyasha Michelle, the award-winning rapper explained that church no longer feels like a place of worship when he is present. Instead of blending into the congregation, he says his presence shifts attention away from prayer and toward celebrity.
“I can’t go to church, and that sucks,” Nasty C admitted. “Because of how I feel when I’m in church.”
According to the rapper, the issue is not with religion or belief, but with how people react when they recognise him. He described feeling uncomfortable as congregants turned around to stare, give side glances, or discreetly pull out their phones to record him, rather than focusing on the sermon or prayer.
“I end up feeling like the devil because everyone is turning around looking at me instead of praying,” he said. Nasty C added that the atmosphere often feels rushed, as if some attendees are more eager for the service to end so they can approach him for photos than to engage spiritually.
“People are not really praying,” he explained. “People are just rushing for this thing to end so they can come swing me for pictures. That’s weird. I don’t think that should happen in that environment.”
For the Durban-born artist, the church is meant to be a sacred and reflective space, and the attention he draws disrupts that purpose. As a result, he has made the difficult decision to stay away, even though it is something he genuinely misses. “That’s why I can’t go to church anymore,” he concluded.
