South African hip-hop star Flvme, born Lesego Kyle Mnyandu, has shared a deeply personal victory with fans, revealing that he is officially two months sober from what many interpret as lean, the codeine-based mixture that has long been associated with rap culture.
The announcement came via X, where Flvme marked the occasion with a champagne glass emoji. The symbolic toast represented more than celebration. It signalled a conscious decision to embrace clarity, discipline, and a new chapter in both his life and career. Flvme emerged as a promising voice in South African hip-hop during his high school years. His early rise included time with The Wrecking Crew before he branched out as a solo act in 2019. His debut EP, Clouds, in 2017 introduced audiences to his melodic instincts and effortless delivery. Momentum continued with CandyMan in 2019, a project that earned him Best Freshman honours at the South African Hip Hop Awards and cemented his reputation as one of the culture’s brightest young talents.
His 2025 album BLVCK & WHiTE further elevated his standing. The 21-track body of work explored themes of duality, vulnerability, and inner tension, featuring collaborations with heavyweights like Zoocci Coke Dope and Young Stunna. The project showcased an artist unafraid to examine both his shadows and his strengths.
Lean, sometimes referred to as purple drank or sizzurp, has left a lasting imprint on hip-hop culture, contributing to addiction struggles involving artists such as Lil Wayne, Mac Miller, and Juice WRLD.
