Crusaders teammates in training brawl

Tensions boiled over at Crusaders training on Tuesday as two teammates exchanged punches during a contact session in Christchurch.

Prop Kershawl Sykes-Martin and lock Will Tucker went at each other in training at Rugby Park while media were waiting on the sidelines for interviews.

Crusaders captain David Havili quickly stepped in to separate the two forwards.

The incident comes amid a difficult start to the season for the Christchurch side in Super Rugby Pacific. The Crusaders currently sit eighth on the log with one win from their opening four matches after a 29-13 defeat to the Blues at Eden Park at the weekend.

However, head coach Rob Penney played down the clash, suggesting it reflected the squad’s desire to improve results.

“So there should be [tension],” Penney said when asked about the incident.

“It was a really lovely sight to see, actually. It is a reflection of how much it means. The boys aren’t happy with the performances and the outcomes.

“Very proud young men are going to come up against each other and create a bit of sandpaper from time to time. But it’s not a thing that is going to affect negatively. We are all over it, the boys are fine.”

The incident is the second of the current Super Rugby season, following a pre-season training ground bust-up between Waratahs teammates Angus Scott-Young and Miles Amatosero.

Scott-Young was left with with stitches and a fractured eye socket while Amatosero was suspended for four games.
