The debate gained traction after media personality OkaySwisher suggested during an appearance on the “Up To Speed” show with DJ Speedsta and Fif_Laa that artists like K.O and Stilo Magolide might need to start thinking about retirement.

His remarks quickly circulated across social media and hip hop discussion platforms, reigniting familiar questions about legacy, timing, and whether older artists should step aside to create space for a younger generation.

Ex Global did not hold back in his response. Drawing comparisons with international hip hop figures, the Johannesburg MC argued that age should never determine when an artist’s career comes to an end.

“T.I is 45, and he’s about to drop a new album and go on tour,” Ex Global wrote. “2 Chainz is 48, and Ecco played his latest album for me on our drive to see Flvme. K.O is 45, and he’s still got it. Stilo is 35, and they must retire? I disagree… smh, we have a long way to go, hey.”

His remarks pointed directly to global examples such as T.I. and 2 Chainz, both artists who continue to release music and perform well into their 40s. T.I, the Atlanta rap veteran born in 1980, has recently teased a forthcoming album titled Mitch Mitch: Underground Overground while preparing for a run of tour and festival appearances. Meanwhile, 2 Chainz remains active through new collaborations and releases, a point Ex Global referenced after hearing the rapper’s latest project during a drive with a friend.

The comparison placed a spotlight back on K.O, a foundational voice in South African hip hop whose career spans decades, from his work with Teargas to a string of influential solo records. Despite being 45, K.O continues to command respect across the industry for both his lyricism and cultural impact. Stilo Magolide, around 35 years old and closely associated with the Boyznbucks movement, has also remained creatively active, building a reputation for blending fashion, heritage, and introspective storytelling in his music.

Ex Global’s stance challenges the notion that hip hop should enforce an unofficial age limit on its artists. His message suggests that the culture still has room for veterans who continue to create, perform, and influence the scene.

The exchange has since fuelled wider discussions online about how South African hip hop treats its elders, the balance between honouring legacy and welcoming new voices, and whether commentary like Swisher’s contributes to the culture or undermines it.

For Ex Global, the point is simple. Experience and longevity should be celebrated rather than rushed out of the spotlight. In his view, both locally and internationally, hip hop still has plenty of space for the artists who helped build it.
