Saffas Abroad: Cheslin piles up points

Springbok speedster Cheslin Kolbe scored 28 points as South Africa’s foreign legion impressed across England and Japan.

Flank Hanro Liebenberg started in the Leicester Tigers’ 66-14 hammering of the Exeter Chiefs in the Premiership Rugby Cup final at Welford Road. A South African front row of hooker Joseph Dweba and props Ethan Burger and Khwezi Mona scrummed down for the Chiefs.

Japan Rugby League One
Eight South Africans featured in the Saitama Wild Knights’ 32-30 win against the Kubota Spears in Tokyo. Springbok centre Damian de Allende dotted down in the first half for the Wild Knights, while lock Ockie Barnard featured as a replacement. World Rugby Player of the Year Malcolm Marx powered the Spears scrum along with Ruan Botha, David Bulbring, Tyler Paul and Merwe Olivier, while Rikus Pretorius started in midfield.

Springbok flank Franco Mostert captained the Honda Heat in a 31-26 defeat to the Canon Eagles in Tochigi, while tighthead prop Matthys Basson, lock Janko Swanepoel and centre Dawid Kellerman also started. Springbok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk made his return from injury for the Eagles.

Former Lions centre Sylvian Mahuza started for the Shizuoka Blue Revs in their 37-33 loss to the Black Rams in Tokyo.

Pieter Scholtz and Gideon Koegelenberg packed down for the Dynaboars in a 61-10 defeat to the Kobe Steelers in Hyogo.

Toyota Verblitz lock Lourens Erasmus dotted down twice in a 59-19 win against the Urayasu D-Rocks in Aichi. Hooker Schalk Erasmus came off the bench for the Verblitz.

Cheslin Kolbe ran in two tries and kicked 18 points as the Suntory Sungoliath crushed the Brave Lupus 60-21 in Tokyo.

Former Stormers flyhalf Manie Libbok kicked eight points in the Kintetsu Liners’ 50-48 win against the Kyuden Voltex in Fukuoka.
