The Lions are expecting a fired up Boan Venter at Ellis Park on Saturday, when they host Edinburgh in the Vodacom URC.
Venter is due to join the Lions next season, but first he must face them in what promises to be a bruising battle up front.
Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen has already identified the scrums as a key area, especially with Asenathi Ntlabakanye expected to return to bolster the home side.
“We definitely feel we need to be more consistent in that area [scrums],” Van Rooyen said. “Boan has done really well over the past year, for Edinburgh and the Boks. I think he will want to prove a point on Saturday before he joins us next season.”
NORTJÉ: Bulls have to be much better
The clash sets up a fascinating duel between two Springbok props, with both Venter and Ntlabakanye having made their Test debuts last year.
While the Lions secured victory in their last home derby against the Stormers, their scrum came under pressure, something they’ll be determined to fix against a powerful Edinburgh pack.

The Joburg-based side has a run of four home games against Edinburgh, the Dragons, Glasgow and Connacht before away clashes against Leinster and Munster.
Van Rooyen says it’s still very much in their own hands to qualify for the URC playoffs.
“We are really proud of winning the SA Shield. But our work’s not done yet. In the last few seasons we were dependent on other results going our way to qualify.”
