It wasn’t always pretty but the Stormers did enough to defeat the Dragons at Cape Town Stadium on Sunday.
The home side won 29-21 after leading 14-7 at half-time and climbed back to second on the Vodacom URC log.
The Stormers produced moments of quality but were let down by a litany of errors throughout. In contrast, the second-from-bottom Dragons belied their lowly log position as they stayed in the fight.
The Stormers were first to score when scrumhalf Imad Khan found Springbok flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu running a brilliant line.

The duo combined for the Stormers’ second converted try. A scrappy maul saw the ball pop out and Khan snapped it up before going blindside and sending Feinberg-Mngomezulu in.

The penalty count starting mounting against the visitors as the Stormers began exerting dominance at the set-piece and point of contact.
However, against the run of play, the Dragons scored, rangy lock Seb Davies running in under the posts. Flyhalf Angus O’Brien added the extras and the visitors were back in the game.
The Dragons were almost in again minutes later after a fast counter-attack and only a last-ditch tackle by Feinberg-Mngomezulu prevented another score.

The Stormers were dominating the possession stats but it was the Welsh club that ended the half stronger and the hosts did well to keep their defensive line intact.
The Stormers heeded the warning and an early breakdown penalty in the second half saw Feinberg-Mngomezulu step up to slot from distance for a 17-7 lead.
The Stormers, however, missed further chances to score, including two knock-ons with the tryline begging.
But their scrum was kicking into overdrive and from a Dragons put-in at the set-piece, the visitors were shoved off their ball and No 8 Evan Roos picked up to drive over. A third Feinberg-Mngomezulu conversion took the Stormers out to a 24-7 lead.
But the Dragons weren’t done and moments later replacement loose forward Thomas Young crashed over.
The Stormers then got a touch of fortune as replacement wing Wandisile Simelane took advantage of a wretched bounce to crash over for the bonus-point try and a 15-point buffer.

With 10 minutes left, Feinberg-Mngomezulu performed his second try-saving act of the match when he just managed to get his hand to the ball ahead of dangerous wing Rio Dyer in a race in the in-goal area.
But minutes later, Dyer did get his try as he scythed through the home side’s defence. The conversion, which made it an eight-point game, proved to be the final score.

The Stormers now prepare to host 13th-placed Edinburgh next Saturday, while the Dragons fly to Joburg to face the Lions.
