In recent remarks, the Johannesburg-based musician, famous for tracks like “Automobile” featuring Cassper Nyovest, admitted that he initially mistook his symptoms for a stubborn flu before receiving a shocking diagnosis.

“Gents, you know I had TB bro, that’s why I was down, bro,” Reign Racks shared. “I had TB. I disappeared for months; it was going down. Nigga, I had the flu nigga. I thought it was the flu, I was coughing boy for like a month. A month goes by, and I’m like I’m still coughing? What’s going on? Aai haah sharp.”

Like many who ignore early warning signs, he first turned to a general practitioner and received medication that failed to bring relief. “I went to the doctor, the normal doctor, though, I didn’t go to the hospital and I got medication, but nothing happened. I’m like, what’s going on?”

Only after seeking hospital care did a series of tests, including an HIV test that came back negative, blood sugar checks, and a chest X-ray, confirm the truth: pulmonary TB that had been active for months. “They did an X-ray and checked my lungs and said you have TB and it’s been there for months. And I’m like, doctor, tell, because I’m uneducated about this thing.”

Medical staff explained that standard TB treatment, consisting of daily pills, would bring recovery over several months. TB is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs, and it is treatable with consistent antibiotic therapy. Despite this, South Africa remains one of the countries most heavily affected by the disease, where early symptoms like a prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, fever, and night sweats can easily be mistaken for a cold.

Reign Racks described the severe toll on his body. He lost so much weight that he felt “the size of my finger,” and his clothes hung loosely, forcing him to stay home in isolation. “I was getting skinny boy, lost weight. You see, I’m back. I was like the size of my finger. I was losing weight, and my pants were falling. I was at home hiding from niggas.”

Despite the physical and emotional strain, including the stigma that often accompanies a TB diagnosis, he expressed gratitude for making a full recovery. “Thank God I was able to recover and I’m back.”

His story shines a light on the realities of TB in South Africa. Early symptoms are often mistaken for minor illnesses, delaying diagnosis and treatment. Health authorities warn that anyone with a persistent cough lasting more than two weeks should get tested. Free screening and treatment are widely available at public clinics and hospitals.

Reign Racks’ return is more than a personal victory. His openness about the illness may help reduce stigma and encourage others experiencing similar symptoms to seek help quickly, potentially saving lives in a country where TB continues to claim thousands each year.
