Loki Explains The True Meaning Behind His New Single “July.” Durban’s own award-winning hip-hop artist Loki (real name Ndlelenhle Nyuswa), affectionately known as Lokish or “Tom Cruise omnyama,” officially released his deeply personal new single “July”.

Out now on all major streaming platforms, the track marks the beginning of what the KZN-native describes as a long-planned creative journey for 2026, setting the tone for two upcoming projects, including a full album.
In a candid explanation shared shortly after the release, Loki opened up about the song’s origins and emotional core. When asked about its meaning, he didn’t hold back:
“First thing first, ‘July’ out now. Somebody asked me what the meaning of ‘July’ is and how it came about because there’s something in that song, there’s a feeling there.”
He continued: “So July is a song that comes from regrets about how you wish you could’ve done certain things differently. Especially when everything was maybe burdening your life. Because everyone seems to remember home when it’s bad. People go home when things are bad, and when life is just chowing them, you know.”
Loki reflected on his own journey with a mix of honesty and tenderness: “So I would’ve loved to have done certain things when I could do certain things. Not that I never did anything, but I’m a person who always wants to do things better, especially for the people I love. So that song is that, and that song is a piece of me, and I also try to do it so that other people can find a piece of themselves in the song.”
The artist’s words paint “July” as more than just a track. It is a vulnerable confession wrapped in melody and rhythm. Drawing from the universal experience of hindsight and the way hardship drives us back to our roots, the song captures that quiet ache many feel, but few articulate: the wish to have shown up more fully for family and loved ones when it mattered most, before life’s burdens made “home” feel like the only refuge.
Fans and critics alike have already noted the song’s reflective vibe and heartfelt lyrics, which blend introspective storytelling with Loki’s signature South African hip-hop sound. It is the kind of record that resonates because it does not sugarcoat reality. Instead, it offers solidarity.
This release comes at a pivotal moment for the Durban-bred MC, who first broke through under K.O.’s Skhanda World imprint and has since built a loyal following with projects like Amaphanta, Bade Lami, and Intandokazi. “July” is not algorithm-chasing radio fodder. It is the authentic, personal music that has always defined Loki’s lane, and it is already earning playlist spots on Apple Music while sparking conversations across social media.
In a music scene often dominated by bravado and flexing, Loki’s willingness to lay bare his imperfections feels refreshing and necessary. “July” invites listeners to sit with their own unspoken wishes, their quiet “what ifs,” and the enduring pull of home when the world feels heavy.
Stream “July” now and let the feeling sink in. For many, it may just be the piece of themselves they did not know they needed to hear voiced out loud this March.
