Schalla predicts ‘horrible experience’ for Poms

Schalk Burger has warned England they could be brutally exposed if they’re not at their best against the Springboks.

England’s recent Six Nations campaign unravelled after a strong start against Wales, with defeats to Scotland, Ireland and Italy ending their title hopes, before a late resurgence saw them push France to the brink in a 48-46 thriller in Paris.

Burger believes England’s inconsistency makes them dangerous, but also vulnerable, heading into the Nations Championship clash at Ellis Park on 4 July.

“That England performance [against France] will fill them with a lot of confidence and they will come to South Africa knowing that they have to be at their best,” the former Bok flank said on The Verdict podcast.

“If you are a little bit off, if England come here and the performance is off and inconsistent like they’ve been – losing four in a row in the Six Nations – it can be a horrible experience for them.

“They will come here knowing that they have to be at their best.”

RASSIE: Boks have to hit ground running

Former Springbok captain Jean de Villiers insists England remain formidable opposition.

“They started poorly [in the Six Nations], but they brought it back,” he said. “They will still be a threat to be reckoned with in July.”
