SA Cup: SWD stun Boland, Griquas march on

The SWD Eagles handed the Boland Cavaliers their first defeat of the SA Cup season, while Griquas and the Pumas continued their strong runs in round four.

Coach Heyneke Meyer’s Eagles produced their best performance of the campaign to beat Boland 33-24 in George.

The teams were locked at 7-7 at half-time, but SWD found another gear in the second half.

Trailing 21-7, the Eagles hit back through a try from loose forward Ulrich Stander before taking control late on. Lock Dylan de Leeuw’s try put the hosts ahead, while Stander completed a hat-trick as SWD sealed a deserved win.

Griquas remain top of the log after a 71-7 thrashing of the Griffons in Kimberley.

The defending champions ran in 11 tries to one, leading 31-0 at the break. Winger Dylan Maart crossed three times, while fulback Connor Mahoney grabbed a brace as Griquas made it four wins from four.

In Bloemfontein, the Cheetahs kept themselves in the semi-final race with a convincing 52-19 win over Eastern Province.

Wing Cohen Jasper and lock Carl Wegner both crossed twice as the hosts built a 24-5 half-time lead before pulling away in the second half.

The Leopards claimed their first win of the season, beating Border 31-14 in Potchefstroom.

The sides were level at 14-14 at the break, but the Leopards dominated the second half, with winger Siniothando Tshontsyi completing a hat-trick to seal the result.

The Pumas wrapped up the weekend with a 42-36 win over the Valke in Nelspruit.

Flank Ntsika Fisanti starred with a first-half hat-trick as the defending champions moved up to joint second on the log.
