Nienaber narrative misses mark

Jacques Nienaber’s role at Leinster is being shaped more by perception than performance, writes MARK KEOHANE.

Writing for TimesLIVE, Keohane challenges the idea that senior coach Nienaber is to blame when Leinster lose but overlooked when they win, describing it as “lazy, a convenient narrative and fundamentally dishonest”.

He argues that Nienaber arrived in Dublin in 2024 not as a failure, but as the defensive architect behind the Springboks’ 2021 British & Irish Lions series win and 2023 World Cup triumph.

Yet, in Irish rugby circles, he has been cast as an outsider disrupting a system expected to keep delivering success.

“But systems age, cycles end and dynasties fade,” Keohane writes.

The Leinster side Nienaber inherited, he notes, was no longer the dominant force of the Jonny Sexton era, with depth, certainty and swagger all diminished compared to previous seasons.

Despite this, Nienaber’s first full campaign delivered a URC title, while also tightening a defensive system that had previously faltered in knockout rugby.

“He brought edge and instilled confrontation,” writes Keohane.

The contrast, he adds, is stark when compared to the praise afforded to coaches like Johann van Graan at Bath and Franco Smith at Glasgow, both widely credited for their teams’ resurgence and identity.

In Dublin, however, credit is often skewed towards head coach Leo Cullen, while Nienaber is positioned as the fall guy when results dip.

Keohane argues this perception is rooted in an exaggerated view of Leinster’s historical dominance, adding: “Short-term success – four Investec Champions Cup titles in 30 attempts – is told as if it were 30 title wins.”

Ultimately, he insists Nienaber has neither been a passenger in success nor solely responsible for failure – and that the narrative surrounding him says more about bias than reality.
