Sacha: ‘Dagger to the heart’ loss a reality check

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu says the Stormers will turn Saturday’s gut-wrenching loss to Connacht into fuel as they gear up to face the competition log-leaders.

The playmaker says the 33-24 Vodacom URC loss has forced a reset inside the squad as they prepare for a defining stretch of the season.

“As far as how we’re feeling, it was a good reality check,” Feinberg-Mngomezulu told the media on Monday.

“Just the way we lost also – proper dagger to the heart with that intercept and try under the posts and us thinking about stopping a conversion. That’s where we were at and that wasn’t nice.

It’s caused a lot of honesty already today and some hard chats that maybe wouldn’t have happened if we had won that game. We’re now ready to go for that last stretch. There’s no more time for fluffiness. We want to get the job done and make Chippie [Solomon] proud at the end of it.”

The defeat has triggered honest reflection and internal pressure, with the squad determined not to let the same errors creep in against a Glasgow Warriors side also desperate to respond after last week’s heavy defeat to the Lions.

Saturday’s clash at Cape Town Stadium now carries added weight, with both teams chasing momentum at the top end of the table.

One of the Stormers’ biggest weapons could be the growing understanding between Feinberg-Mngomezulu and scrumhalf Cobus Reinach.

“I love playing with Cobus,” he said.

STATE OF THE URC: Stormers seek Glasgow redemption

“Personally I think he’s one of the best nines in the world, especially with a younger ten, he’s just really solid. He knows how to pull back sometimes and help me and the rest of the game drivers control the game. We’ve made some incredible memories with the Boks. The Bulls twice, La Rochelle at home – we’ve already had a good couple of games. Now it’s time to convert those into points on the log for the team.”

The second-placed Stormers are on 51 log points – four adrift of the Warriors. But have Leinster (51) and the Lions (48) on their heels.
