Players who take part in Mzansi Rugby League trials face immediate expulsion from all Saru leagues and competitions.
Planned to kick off in 2027, the 16-team MRL will span nine provinces and aims to become “the new home for South Africa’s next generation of talent”, offering salaries between R15,000 and R30,000 per month along with full medical aid coverage.
Matthew Kriel, the younger brother of Springbok centre Jesse, was in February appointed head of recruitment for the MRL.

The first of the MLR trials will take place at Northwood Crusaders Sports Club in Durban North on 5 July. Players are charged a trial fee of R899.
On Friday, Saru issued a statement warning players who are registered with a Saru entity against participating in the trials.
“The South African Rugby Union wishes to make clear its position regarding unauthorised trial competitions currently being promoted outside the structures of the global game.
“Any player registered with a Saru entity who elects to participate in these trials will face immediate expulsion from all Saru leagues and competitions.
“Saru’s responsibility is to safeguard the integrity of its competitions, protect the welfare of players and uphold the values of the game. Participation in unsanctioned trials undermines these principles and threatens the stability of rugby both domestically and internationally.
“Saru calls on all players, agents, and stakeholders to respect the established pathways of the sport. Saru remains committed to providing opportunities for growth and excellence within the structures recognised by World Rugby and its partner unions. Any deviation from these structures cannot be tolerated.
“The future of the game depends on unity, discipline and respect for the frameworks that protect it. Saru will act decisively to ensure these standards are upheld.”
