Saffas Abroad: Trokkie trucks on, Kolbe delivers

Juarno Augustus and Cheslin Kolbe were among the South Africans to catch the eye as the club season and knockout cup action nears the business end in Europe and Japan.

Investec Champions Cup:

Carlü Sadie started in the front row as title-holders Bordeaux-Begles booked a place in the Investec Champions Cup final with a 38-26 win against Johann van Graan’s Bath. Springbok prop Thomas du Toit and replacement Frans van Wyk packed down for Bath.

EPCR Challenge Cup:

Former Bulls and Pumas flyhalf Tinus de Beer marshalled the Dragons backline in a 18-12 loss to Montpellier.

Juarno Augustus dotted down for Ulster in a 29-12 win over Exeter Chiefs in Belfast. Former Stormers hooker Joseph Dweba and prop Ethan Burger featured off the bench for Chiefs.

Japan Rugby League One:

Flanker Juan Wilson scored a brace of tries in the Saitama Wild Knights’ 27-24 defeat to the Urayasu D-Rocks.

Cheslin Kolbe scored 12 points from the tee as the Suntory Sungoliath beat the Toyota Verblitz 54-38 in Aichi. Lourens Erasmus started at lock for Verblitz.

Bok loose forward Kwagga Smith packed down at No 8 in the Shizuoka Blue Revs’ 35-29 loss to the Toshiba Brave Lupus in Tokyo. Former Lions back Sylvian Mahuza ran out in midfield in the colours of the Blue Revs.

Matthys Basson and Janko Swanepoel scrummed down for the Honda Heat in their 24-19 defeat to Kobe Steelers in Osaka, with Dawid Kellerman featuring at centre.

Six South Africans were included in the Kubota Spears’ 52-8 rout of the Black Rams Tokyo in Fukushima. Centre Rikus Pretorius and forward Tyler Paul scored for the Spears, while Malcolm Marx, Merwe Olivier, David Bulbring and Ruan Botha also contributed to the win.

Jesse Kriel and Faf de Klerk’s Canon Eagles came out on top against Lukhanyo Am’s Mitsubishi Dynaboars 31-22 in Tokyo. Kriel crossed the whitewash in the first half. Prop Pieter Scholtz, too, made his presence felt for the Dynaboars.
