Saffas Abroad: Kwagga, Kolbe killing it in Japan

Kwagga Smith and Cheslin Kolbe were among the standout performers as South Africa’s foreign legion impressed across Europe and Japan.

Former Sharks centre Jeremy Ward came off the bench for Stade Français in a 59-17 thrashing of Lyon in Paris. Lock Janse Roux and loose forward Arno Botha scrummed down for Lyon.

Former Stormers and Sharks loose forward Sikhumbuzo Notshe started at blindside flank in Montauban’s 59-7 defeat to Montpellier. JT Jackson started in the Montauban midfield.

Prop Nemo Roelofse, lock Jaco van Tonder and scrumhalf James Hall started in Perpignan’s 45-14 loss to Clermont.

Former Stormers scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies dotted down in the second half as Bayonne were edged 40-38 by Bordeaux Bègles.

English Premiership
Prop Ethan Burger and hooker Joseph Dweba featured for the Exeter Chiefs in their 35-12 win against Johann van Graan’s Bath. Franz van Wyk started in Bath’s front row with fellow prop Thomas du Toit coming off the bench early in the second half.

Centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg started in the Bristol Bears’ 41-26 defeat to Saracens at Ashton Gate. Scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl was used as a replacement by Sarries.

Flank Hanro Liebenberg faced off against lock JJ van der Mescht in the Leicester Tigers’ 41-17 win against the Northampton Saints at Welford Road.

Flank James Venter and prop Dian Bleuler featured in Gloucester’s 21-15 win against the Sale Sharks. Locks Hyron Andrews and Ernst van Rhyn, flank Jacques Vermeulen and centre Marius Louw started for Sale.

Japan Rugby League One
Springbok loose forward Kwagga Smith crossed the whitewash in the Shizuoka Blue Revs’ 42-15 win against the Canon Eagles in Shizuoka. Midfielder Sylvian Mahuza also featured for the Blue Revs. Springbok centre Jesse Kriel captained the Eagles, while scrumhalf Faf de Klerk came off the bench.

Prop Matthys Basson, lock Franco Mostert and centres Janko Swanepoel and Dawid Kellerman helped the Honda Heat to a 38-26 win against the Toyota Verblitz in Mie. Lock Lourens Erasmus started for the Verblitz.

Six South Africans ran out in the Kubota Spears’ 24-19 defeat to the Kobe Steelers in Tokyo. Hooker Malcom Marx powered over in the first half, while locks Ruan Botha, David Bulbring and Merwe Olivier, and flank Tyler Paul also featured in the forward pack. Rikus Pretorius started in the Spears midfield.

Winger Cheslin Kolbe scored 17 points – via a try, three conversions and two penalty goals – as the Suntory Sungoliath earned a 39-22 win against the Black Rams Tokyo.

Bok No 8 Jasper Wiese came off the bench in the Urayasu D-Rocks’ 29-22 win against the Mitsubishi Dynaboars in Kanagawa. Springbok centre Lukhanyo Am marshalled the midfield for the Dynaboars, with prop Pieter Scholtz scoring a second-half try.

Flyhalf Manie Libbok scored 12 points from the tee in the Kintetsu Liners’ 34-27 defeat to Toyota Industries Aichi in Osaka.
