DJ Speedsta Slams SA Rap Wars Turning Ugly: “Ase Mo States Mo.” DJ Speedsta has stepped into the heated SA Hip Hop discourse with a strong plea for peace, warning that the culture is losing its focus as rap rivalries spiral beyond music and into dangerous territory.

The veteran broadcaster and DJ addressed the growing tensions surrounding the ongoing feud involving Mswenko Franko and the GMG camp, where diss tracks and online hostility have reportedly escalated into death threats. While the clashes have captured attention across social media and streaming platforms, Speedsta believes the line between competition and real-life conflict is being crossed far too easily.
“Look, the beef thing is getting very, very boring. Yeah. I have to agree with you, I have to,” Speedsta said. “And number two, ase mo states mona, the whole wars, whatever. Is really not it. I don’t think that’s what’s supposed to happen because I think what’s supposed to happen from these beefs and whatever is to see the music doing well, getting more music, seeing the music charts.”
Rather than condemning rap battles entirely, Speedsta emphasised that lyrical competition has always been part of hip hop culture. However, he stressed that the purpose should be to sharpen artistry, grow audiences, and push the music further instead of creating fear and division within the scene.
To illustrate his point, he referenced the globally discussed feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, arguing that even one of the biggest rap clashes in recent memory remained centred on music rather than violence.
“I don’t think Kendrick’s people went to kill Drake’s people. I think it was a competition, music-wise. You know what I mean? So, I really hope you guys can resolve that.”
The comments arrive at a time when South African hip hop is experiencing renewed energy online, with diss tracks generating major engagement and sparking intense fan debates. Yet alongside the excitement, concerns have grown over intimidation tactics, personal attacks, and the emotional toll these feuds can have on artists and commentators caught in the crossfire.
Speedsta’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment shared by many industry figures who believe healthy rivalry can elevate the genre when handled responsibly. For them, the real win lies in chart success, cultural impact, and unforgettable records rather than personal vendettas.
