Wikus van Heerden says the Lions’ stunning Vodacom URC campaign has rekindled the pride of the club.
The fifth-placed Lions are in Limerick, knowing a win over sixth-placed Munster will seal a top-eight spot and a first URC playoff appearance.
Van Heerden – who represented both the Lions and Vodacom Bulls during his playing days – believes the resurgence has given supporters something to get excited about again.
“It’s great to see the Lions at that level again, especially given their glorious history. It’s something that excites any supporter or former player of the Lions,” Van Heerden told Netwerk24.

The Lions have delivered some eye-catching performances this season, including a 54-12 win over the then log-leading Glasgow Warriors at Ellis Park in April.
“Yes, they make mistakes here and there at critical moments,” Van Heerden said. “But the younger players are seizing the opportunities they get, and that shows me growth is taking place. There is a maturity in the team.”
Van Heerden believes success on the field is crucial to bringing fans back through the turnstiles at Ellis Park, something the Lions desperately need after years of mediocrity.
CASH: Munster clash do-or-die for Lions
“Supporters want to go watch the rugby on a weekend, perhaps enjoy a beer with friends and brag about their team,” he said. “It’s important that a team delivers good results. You must be successful to attract spectators.”
