Banned Bok prop ponders next move

Lions and Springbok prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye could appeal his 18-month doping ban.

According to Rapport, Ntlabakanye and his representatives are set to meet with stakeholders in Johannesburg on Monday to discuss the verdict and possible next steps in the process.

“The case may still be ongoing,” a source told the publication.

Ntlabakanye tested positive on 22 May 2025 for anastrozole, a non-performance-enhancing substance prescribed by a doctor. He was also charged for declaring the use of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) – a performance-enhancing substance – on a medical form.

The 27-year-old has been banned until 13 November 2027, and must also forfeit any income and awards he received since testing positive.

The player, the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (Saids), World Rugby and the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) have 21 days in which to file an appeal against the sanction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

POLL: Does Bok prop deserve 18-month ban?

According to Daily Maverick, the Lions are expected to honour Ntlabakanye’s contract as they regard him as a victim of medical negligence.

However, he stands to lose up to R5-million in Bok earnings over the next 18 months.
