Goosen stays in the game

Johan Goosen has moved into coaching despite not formally announcing his retirement as a player.

According to Rapport, the former Springbok flyhalf served as an attacking and kicking coach under head coach Phiwe Nomlomo as the Bulls XV claimed a dramatic 33-32 victory over the Lions XV in Friday’s SA Rugby U23 Cup final at Ellis Park.

Injuries are understood to have convinced the 33-year-old to move on from professional rugby.

The Bulls have already strengthened their flyhalf stocks ahead of next season, signing Curwin Bosch from French club Brive and highly rated Sharks youngster Luan Giliomee.

Goosen’s involvement with the U23 side has fuelled speculation that he could remain at Loftus in a permanent coaching capacity.

The Bulls have reportedly acknowledged that such a move is a possibility, although no formal decision has yet been made.

Goosen also has business interests in farming and the insurance industry.
