Inside Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry

SA Rugby GM of operations Yusuf Jackson has detailed the immense logistical undertaking behind the All Blacks’ blockbuster tour of South Africa later this year.

In the new issue of SA Rugby magazine, Jackson reveals the scale of the planning behind Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry.

“This is as close to a World Cup as you’re going to get in terms of scale and logistics,” he says.

The All Blacks will travel through South Africa as a touring group of around 80 people before the series finale in Baltimore, USA — with SA Rugby and NZ Rugby working jointly on everything from charter flights and training venues to security, hotels and fan experiences.

The tour marks the first full-scale All Blacks tour of South Africa in 30 years and Jackson says meticulous planning has gone into recreating the traditions of old-school rugby tours while delivering a modern global sports event.

“We want to create access for supporters where possible,” he says, revealing that the All Blacks are expected to hold open training sessions during the tour.

Jackson also explains how the touring teams will move around the country, why Ellis Park was chosen for the opening Test, the role of fan villages and Bok Town events, and why the series will operate under extraordinary security measures.

“NatJoints is fully involved … it’s almost like hosting a visiting head of state,” he says.

Jackson believes Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry will be a unique event that fans will remember for the rest of their lives.

“This is a tour like no other. This is not just rugby’s greatest rivalry … it is one of sport’s greatest rivalries.”
