SA’s tallest schoolboy signs first contract

Towering Rondebosch Boys’ High lock Sebastian Vermeulen will leave Cape Town to join one of South Africa’s top clubs.

News24 reports that Vermeulen has signed a two-year development contract with the Sharks. He will be based at the Sharks Academy as part of a high-performance programme.

The 18-year-old, who is South Africa’s tallest schoolboy rugby player at 2.06m and weighs 140kg, will relocate to Durban in January.

BOSCH GIANT: I’ve always been the biggest

Vermeulen’s mother, Lindsey, confirmed the deal this week and said the family carefully considered the opportunity before making a final decision.

“There was a lot for him to process,” she said. “He is going away, so he had to think about how he would manage that. We wanted him to make an informed decision instead of a rushed one.

“He’s very excited to be joining a professional club next year. It has been one of his dreams.”

Importantly, the Sharks set-up will also allow Vermeulen to continue his studies while developing as a player.

“I’m really excited for this opportunity,” said Vermeulen. “It’s not every day that you get presented with something of this magnitude, and because of that, I feel I have to give it my all.”
