Giliomee stars as Junior Boks trounce Fiji

Fullback Luan Giliomee scored three of the Junior Springboks’ 12 tries in a crushing win against Fiji in the U20 International Series on Tuesday.

Five days after putting 97 unanswered points past Chile, South Africa smashed the Pacific Islanders 82-25 at Wynberg Boys’ High in Cape Town, having led 56-11 at half-time.

However, the Junior Boks were far from perfect and there is still work to do ahead of the Junior World Championship in Georgia.

The Junior Boks were in after less than 90 seconds as a slick team move was finished by Giliomee. Four minutes later, flank Quintin Potgieter crossed after a powerful maul, with flyhalf and captain Vusi Moyo again adding the extras.

Fiji capitalised on a Bok infringement, with flank Suliano Savenaca on hand to score, but relentless attacks saw centre Christian Vorster and No 8 Luke Cannon go over for converted tries.

Fiji flyhalf Sikeli Bari landed two penalty goals, before the Junior Boks ran in further tries from flank Gert Kemp (two), lock JD Hattingh and a second for Giliomee.

The second half saw more of the same as Giliomee darted in for his hat-trick.

However, similar to the Chile game, there was a notable drop-off from the Junior Boks in intensity and accuracy in the second half, with the heavy underfoot conditions not helping.

However, they still managed to add further tries by replacements Bongani Dlamini and Luan Olivier.

Fiji were awarded a penalty try when a driving maul was illegally brought down, resulting in a yellow card for Junior Boks replacement hooker Altus Rabe. But Fiji flyhalf Bari then saw red for a high hit.

There was still time for further scores by Jaythen Orange for the Junior Boks and Fiji right wing Apete Rokosuka.

The Junior Boks play Georgia in the final match of the series at Markötter Stadium at Paul Roos Gymnasium on Saturday.

JUNIOR SPRINGBOKS – Tries: Luan Giliomee (3), Quintin Potgieter, Christian Vorster, Luke Cannon, Gert Kemp (2), JD Hattingh, Bongani Dlamini, Luan Olivier, Jaythen Orange. Conversions: Vusi Moyo (11).
FIJI U20 – Tries: Suliano Savenaca, Apete Rokosuka, penalty try. Conversion: Netani Lesimaimatuku. Penalties: Sikeli Bari (2).
