Below-par Blitzboks battle past Kenya

The Blitzboks overcame a committed Kenya team in an error-strewn match at the SVNS World Championship in Valladolid on Friday.

South Africa won 14-0 to end day one unbeaten, having scored an extra-time try to defeat Great Britain earlier in the day.

The SVNS series winners take on Australia in their final pool match on Saturday (1:23pm SA time).

After a tightly-contested first four minutes against their African rivals, the Blitzboks opened the scoring through an intercept try by Shilton van Wyk, with Tristan Leyds adding the extras.

Kenya made a plethora of costly handling errors in the first half, but the Blitzboks also weren’t at their best and led just 7-0 at the break.

The first four minutes of the second half were just as scrappy, with Blitzboks coach Philip Snyman turning to his bench in search of a spark.

Kenya were then reduced to six men when Denis Abukuse saw yellow for a deliberate knock-down and South Africa took full advantage, with Sebastiaan Jobb’s converted try securing the win.
