Steyn delivers for Glasgow again

Kyle Steyn’s brilliance ensured Glasgow survived a dangerous Connacht challenge and kept their Vodacom URC title defence alive, writes MARK KEOHANE.

Writing for the Sunday Times, Keohane says Steyn produced the defining moments in Glasgow’s 33-21 quarter-final victory, first with a try-saving tackle and later with the attacking spark that shifted momentum permanently towards the Scottish hosts.

Connacht had every reason to believe in the upset after previous narrow defeats in Glasgow and a league-stage win over the Warriors this season. At 7-7, the visitors were threatening to take control before Steyn intervened.

“Steyn turned to chase Ioane’s breakaway run, reeled in the former All Blacks flyhalf and saved a certain try,” Keohane writes.

The turning point came early in the second half. A pinpoint 50/22 from Steyn created territory and, moments later, he finished the move himself to hand Glasgow the lead for the first time.

“Ultimately it was that Steyn moment that proved the match winner.”

Keohane traces Steyn’s rise from Griquas and Maties to becoming a Glasgow favourite and Scotland regular, praising his leadership and consistency under coach Franco Smith.

He also shines a light on Benhard Janse van Rensburg, whose path from the Sharks, Southern Kings and Cheetahs has now taken him to England recognition after starring for Bristol.

“Janse van Rensburg has been outstanding for Bristol and London Irish throughout his career,” Keohane writes.

The former Junior Springbok was influential again as Bristol upset Bath in the Premiership, continuing a season that has established him as one of the form midfielders in England.

For Keohane, Steyn and Janse van Rensburg represent two South African exports who have built elite careers abroad through persistence, adaptability and consistent excellence.
