Expanding Foundational Learning Through Technology in Tanzania

For many children in Tanzania, developing foundational literacy and numeracy skills remains a persistent challenge. Large class sizes and varying learning levels can make it difficult to ensure every child builds the core skills needed for future learning, well-being and economic opportunity.

To support these efforts, Asante Africa Foundation partnered with Imagine Worldwide to advance the MsingiTek tablet program, aligned with the Government of Tanzania’s national education priorities. Through this partnership, the program was implemented in 10 public schools in 2025 as part of a broader multi-partner initiative working toward national scale.

Strengthening Foundational Skills Through Adaptive Learning

MsingiTek uses tablet-based, adaptive learning software to complement teacher-led instruction within the national curriculum. Students participate in daily 30-minute sessions using software developed by onebillion, which assesses each learner’s level and delivers appropriate lessons in reading, writing, and mathematics.

The tablets are designed for low-resource environments, functioning without internet connectivity and powered by solar energy. Devices are used individually by students during each session, and then shared among up to 5 students each day, enabling consistent access within existing school schedules.

A Collaborative Approach to Scalable Impact

The MsingiTek program is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), the President’s Office – Regional and Local Government (PO-RALG), the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) Zanzibar, the Tanzania Education Institute (TIE), the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA), and the Zanzibar Education Institute (ZIE) alongside local implementation partners.

As MsingiTek expands, the partnership contributes to strengthening foundational learning at scale, supporting Tanzania’s goal of ensuring all children develop essential literacy and numeracy skills.
