Great Britain beat the Blitzboks, who were twice reduced to six men, after extra-time at the Bordeaux Sevens on Friday.
Finley Lloyd-Gilmour scored a golden-point try to secure a 19-14 win in the teams’ opening match of the third and final SVNS World Championship tournament.
The Blitzboks next take on Kenya at 8:36pm (SA time).
Great Britain made a bright start to the match when Marcus Kershaw bulldozed down the left flank to dot down in the corner.
A forward pass from Ryan Oosthuizen then handed GB possession deep in the Blitzboks half and Darcy Graham crossed for a second to make it 14-0.
Graham, the Scotland Test wing, was called up by Great Britain to help prevent them from slipping out of the top tier of the SVNS series.
GB were reduced to six men when Kaleem Barreto saw yellow for cynical play in the red zone and Ricardo Duarttee dived over to make it 14-7 at the break.
Duarttee helped level the scores with an intercept try after the restart, before Sebastian Jobb was yellow-carded for playing the man in the air.
Graham thought he had set up GB’s third try when he popped the ball to Matt Davidson who dotted down, but a TMO intervention ruled it out for a knock-on in the build-up.
Neither side could win it in regular time, with Graham making a try-saving tackle to force extra-time.
Duarttee was then yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle and Lloyd-Gilmour broke through to seal the win for GB.
