Galston Anthony Pens Poignant Tribute To Late Friend AKA. In the often-noisy intersection of South African politics, media, and entertainment, there are rare moments when everything slows down, and personal memory takes centre stage.

That is what happened when media entrepreneur, podcast host, and Johannesburg mayoral candidate Galston Anthony opened up about his long-standing friendship with hip-hop star Kiernan Jarryd Forbes.
Taking to social media, Anthony shared a message that felt more like a voice note to the past than a public post. Alongside memories stirred up by old photographs, he wrote that Forbes had been weighing on his mind more than usual.
“I don’t know why you’ve been on my mind so much lately, Kiernan (AKA),” he reflected. “Sometimes it still feels like I can just pick up the phone and call you. Maybe we are still in denial about you really being gone. Deeply missed, bro.”
The post came after Anthony visited Forbes’ gravesite, a quiet moment that brought back years of shared history. Their friendship began in 2003 while they were still teenagers in high school, long before Forbes became one of South Africa’s most influential and recognisable rap figures. Through the years, their bond stretched across changing careers, public life, and personal milestones.
Forbes, widely known as AKA or “Supa Mega,” was tragically killed in February 2023 in a drive-by shooting outside a restaurant in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, alongside his close friend Tebello Motsoane. His death sent shockwaves through the country and the global music community, cutting short the life of an artist who helped redefine South African hip-hop with chart-topping tracks, bold charisma, and a commanding stage presence.
Even after his passing, Forbes’ influence has not faded. His music continues to circulate widely, and his persona remains deeply embedded in popular culture. Fans still refer to him as “Supa Mega,” a name that has become shorthand for his larger-than-life legacy.
Anthony’s tribute adds a quieter, more personal layer to that public memory. It speaks to grief that does not resolve cleanly, especially when the person lost was part of one’s formative years. His words highlight how absence can feel strangely active, like someone still almost reachable.
“Super Mega Forever,” he added in a follow-up message, reinforcing the sense that friendship can outlast physical presence, even when it is reduced to memory and echoes.
As Anthony continues his work in media, entrepreneurship, and local politics in Johannesburg, his reflection serves as a reminder that public life does not erase private loss. Behind campaigns, interviews, and appearances, there are still friendships that shaped who people became, and names that continue to surface when things go quiet.
Messages from fans have since poured in, many sharing how Forbes’ music and presence shaped their own lives. It is another reminder that while Kiernan Jarryd Forbes is gone, the cultural imprint he left behind is still very much alive.
Rest in power, Supa Mega.
