‘Skinstad-like’ Mahashe backed for Bok debut

Lions junior teams coach Mziwakhe Nkosi believes Siba Mahashe is on track for a Springbok debut.

Mahashe’s inclusion in the Bok environment has been one of the feel-good stories in South African rugby, and Nkosi is convinced the exposure will accelerate the next phase of the player’s development.

“He has many of the same attributes as Bob Skinstad,” Nkosi told Netwerk24. “I believe he will make his Test debut in the next year or two.

“I will be really happy for him if that happens. If he can get an opportunity with the South Africa A team, that would be wonderful.

“The big thing is that he is going to benefit from being in the Bok environment. We all know that environment is healthy, constructive and geared towards development.”

The former Hudson Park High School pupil first emerged as a national prospect when he captained the SA U18 side in two matches in 2022. After relocating to Johannesburg the following year, he continued his progression and represented the Junior Boks in 2024.

His talent was evident enough that the Blitzboks attempted to lure him to the sevens programme.

Yet it is not only Mahashe’s rugby ability that has impressed Nkosi.

“One of Siba’s best qualities is that he is a great team man. It’s noticeable that there is good energy in any team he plays for. That’s something that’s important to us. He’s also someone who gets along with everyone.”
